The "Hub" - Using Discourse on Cell Phones and Tablets (rewrite)

The Discourse web site adapts to the size of the screen on the device that you’re using. As you move from desktop to tablet to phone, things move around and shrink to fit the real estate.

The Discourse app, called the Discourse Hub, is basically a one click way to our website, squished down and arranged so that it fits on a cell phone. It is a very quick and simple way to check the site, see new postings, and reply if you want. The Discourse Hub is available for free from Google Play and the Apple store. It runs on cell phones and tablets. [It got a low rating because it is little more than a quick way to the web site - no big new bells and whistles].

=====

Our site is nonsuch.discourse.group (the same as our website address). The first time in, you need to supply the site name. You will also need to login with your username and password.

=====

On a tablet, the screen layout will be different depending on how you orient the device. When you go to the webs site - or click on the Discourse Hub icon - if you’re holding the tablet horizontally, you get the regular web page:

Holding it vertically, things need to be rearranged a bit more:

The left side column is now accessible by clicking on the “hamburger” button in the top left, the blue “Create Topic” button is now on the left, etc. Not too different yet …

=====

Click on the Discourse icon on your phone and you get:

It opens the main page in a squished format. The hamburger button is now in the top right. Also in the upper right, I see that I have a personal message (the envelope). The Create Topic button (the pencil) is now a blue button on the upper right. In the middle, I see that there have been some postings since my last visit to our forum.

This functions just like the web site since it is actually just a smaller version of that. When I click on the first topic (it has had 9 replies), it opens the first post in that topic that I have not yet seen:

The top left has a person’s photo (or their first initial if they have not added a photo to their profile). The bottom right shows the reply button. That opens a typical email-like reply window:

Things that you can do on the web site are still available, but turned into buttons to save real estate:

1 - click this to get some typical email text formatting stuff (bold, etc.)

2- click and you open and can review the topic without closing your reply

3 - here is the usual send or trash

4 - this is an upload button for pictures, etc.

As on the regular web site, you can click on a person’s picture or initial, and it will open a little info card about the person. It shows their boat and location, and the “about me” info if any was entered. This is also a way to send a personal message by clicking on the envelope:

So the “Hub” is a one click way to get to the Discourse site, check for new postings, browse and read some current ones, and reply, much as you would write an email.

Push notifications are supposed to work “seamlessly” on the Discourse hub. This is very handy. They do seem to work most of the time…

The old topic about the Discourse Hub was removed.

=====

I had a problem with the Discourse Hub app: I thought it would remember me, and take me straight to the Nonsuch Community Forum. I did get it to save the Forum as a group of interest. But instead of taking me straight there as a logged in user, each time I opened the app I had to click get it to take me to the Forum and then provide my user name and password.

I asked Discourse Help if there was a way to go straight in, and got this answer:

Yes, there is a way to keep the Discourse Hub app logged in to your preferred group (community) so you don’t have to log in again every time you open the app.

Based on recent discussions, here’s what you should do:

  1. Go to your Discourse user profile’s “Apps” tab on your preferred group ( The Nonsuch Community Forum ).

  2. Revoke any duplicate authorizations you see for the app.

  3. Remove your community from the Discourse Hub app.

  4. Re-add your community, making sure to use the correct HTTPS URL (for example, https://nonsuch.discourse.group).

  5. Log in and fully authorize the app.

This process should reset your app authorization and keep you logged in persistently when using the Discourse Hub app. Users have reported that, after following these steps, they no longer get logged out unexpectedly when tapping back into their group.

For additional help or if you continue to experience issues, please refer to this relevant discussion:

If these steps don’t resolve your issue, please let me know or contact Discourse support at team@discourse.org for further assistance.

Bob (and everyone else) -

Something else to try - this looks easier than using the Discourse Hub.

I just learned that the Discourse Nonsuch site is a “Progressive Web App” and that lets you create a clickable “app” that takes you directly to the site.

On my android phone, using Chrome, it goes like this -

Go to the website and then click on the three dots in the top right -

This opens a menu of actions - click on “Add to home screen”:

Then tell it you want to “Install” this site as an app

And now it will act like an app with it’s own icon. From here you can get to the site in one click.

It also worked on my Windows desktop. Check it out on Safari

Jon

You can also do this in Firefox.

The the little dots are in the bottom right, though.

And the menu option is then near the bottom “Add app to home screen”.

The end result is the same, an icon on your phone screen:

This is really cool. Also, I posted this from my phone while I also had the Forum open on my desktop, and it was synched by the time it took me to look up from one to the other.

Thanks, Jon!

Has anyone tried this on safari on an iPad and how did it work. I am not able to provide that information due to my inherent impatience with all the clicking and such. Also is the boat on the icon anyone that we know or just a generic photo?
Brian

The thumbnail pic is the N30 #300 that Wikipedia uses on its Nonsuch page. It’s easy to change if someone has a favorite that looks good when shrunk to that size.

Sorry, I dont know Safari at all. Google making a PWA into an app on Safari…

Jon

Thanks Jon, got it
Open a new tab on Safari
Type in ‘Nonsuch.discourse.groups’ Open it
Select the up arrow on top right
Scroll down to ‘add to home screen’ and select it
Done
Easy as pie.
