Vote on possible migration from GG to Discourse - actual poll in progress

People are assigned levels, starting at 0 and running up through 4 as they use the site, post things, and time passes. Brian you had made it to level_1. The default for seeing the AI Summarize button was set to level_3 by default. I nudged it down to level_2

We can/should discuss this.

Jon,
Thanks for the reply. I am not really worried about access to any features this platform presents. I am more or less just poking around to see what can be done if it were to be considered as a contender for GDG.

I hit reply on Bob’s posting. Will this end up going to him or to the thread? It only lists him at the top of the reply. I’m hoping it goes to the thread. We’ll see…

I’ve used cruisersforum.com for many years. It is a Vbulletin forum and I’ve setup a few small installations of those myself in years gone by. They are so extensively capable that they can pretty much replace an entire website if you want and features are constantly added to keep them modern. But they take a lot of work to setup and manage. It appears that there are people here with Discourse experience and in a volunteer organization the people who are willing to do the work tend to get it done in the way that they know how. I’m still learning about Discourse, so I wouldn’t pass judgement on which is better - or if it will even survive for the long term. But unless someone wants to put the work into a Vbulletin type site, I think we’ve got to see how good they can make this site. I, for one, appreciate the efforts of those of you who are trying to make this work.

I can provide a couple of answers.

As you now see, a Reply goes to the topic just like an email reply in Google. Also, if you click on a person’s picture, a little info box opens up and one of the choices is an envelop - click on that to communicate directly with the person.

Early in the process, I contacted the cruisersform people about their site. They have put in years of customizations to get it where it is, and in fact are stuck back on version 3 because they can’t move to version 6 without breaking a lot of things. They do have a very nice site…

We landed on Discourse because there seemed to be a mandate from some members of our group that “I must communicate by email or else…”. Discourse had this backward capability along with a reasonable amount of new stuff.

Maybe it’s time to resurrect this topic.

I think it’s getting close to the point where we can send an evaluation to the INA Board (Bob can decide that or leave it to us). As part of that, we could all add written comments, if desired, to the draft under development. (I got a little long winded - what a surprise - I’ll trim it down).

There could be a poll of the Google members, but IMHO it’s up to the Board to decide when and if they want to do that.

We could also set up a vote among current Discourse members to see if there is a consensus of opinion, and include that as a part of the evaluation. Or not.

Comments?

4 all in! Could even be hate to say it “monetized”! I know how much we all dislike the idea of making a buck to support the site but hey we are in new times! We could also wrap the fb group in!

3 or 4. I like the app. It seems easy to use and intuitive.

This topic has been one of the most popular in terms of views and replies.

Now that we have over two dozen Discourse users, I think that it is probably the right time to close this thread and actually use the voting capability to see where we stand. As for polling the full membership on the INA Google group (using Survey Monkey as Rob offered) IMHO it would be very interesting, but we should leave that up to the INA Board to decide whether they want to go that route.
