Blocks for Nonsuch 22

I have been trying to search out if there is a list of replacement blocks for the 22. I hope to hone my search skills , but as of now I am not finding anything specific on blocks and sheave replacements for the 22. Anyone care to help a newbie to the site?

Don NS 22 #16 “Cheers”

Don,

I don’t know of one, either, although maybe one can be assembled if other people come in with answers.

If nothing better comes through, you could use the list of blocks for the N26s as a substitute guide. Other than financial damage, there’s no harm in slightly larger blocks. If you’re an INA member, sign on at Nonsuch.org, click through STORE - REPLACEMENT BLOCKS - NONSUCH 26 REPLACEMENT BLOCKS. That gives the Garhauer block number for each of the blocks needed on a Nonsuch 26.

Garhauer’s good, but this isn’t an endorsement of Garhauer as better than the others, except that they made it easy to find someone to ask about it.

Garhauer’s recommendations for N26s and N30s were reviewed by owners before they were posted on the Nonsuch.org web site. There are only lists up for the 26 and 30 because no owners for other size boats volunteered to review the draft lists.

Don: If you tell us where you or your boat is in your signature, you may find someone near you with a 22. In the meantime, did you get a manual with the boat??

Hi Don,

Garhauer has some really great quality blocks for a reasonable price. Check out their website

I owned a 22 for several years and now own a 26. I have a couple of questions for you. Do you still have the existing blocks? If so, you can get a pair of calipers and measure sheave sizes and block diameters. Also you can measure the diameters of your lines and size accordingly. In most cases, any modern blocks you get that are of similar size to what you had will handle the loads generated by your rig. It’s far more likely for a block to pull out of its mounting than for the block itself to fail.

Hi Don -

Unless you are planning circumnavigate the planet (or worse), I would have complete confidence in Garhauer blocks. As I’m typing this, I see that David Darmstadter just made some a few good points about sizing blocks, etc. Otherwise, if you need new blocks, I’d go with the Garhauer ones sized for an NS26. I sail one of the last NS22s built (#56 - Moustaches - 1986) and I have replaced crummy old blocks with Garhauers that I’ve bought directly from the Garhauer booth at the Toronto Boat Shows (for cheap - they were packing up the booth on the last day - ALWAYS the best day at any boat show BTW) and some Ronstan and Harken blocks (bought for REAL cheap) when they shut down the West Marine store in Toronto. Overwhelmingly, they are a bit too big (as opposed to too small) for my boat and they are a hodge-podge but they sure do the job.

Thanks. I did find that site and the specific lists for the 26 and 30 from INA.
I like the idea of going larger and using 26 hardware . I am concerned with matching the specific mount points and bolt holes with the new blocks if possible. All the original blocks need replacement and i guess i will contact Garheur to get bolt pattern dimensions.

Having previously owned a wonderful NS 22 #30 I found that I should replace some blocks. I was gifted a couple that solved my issue but during that time period I talked to Garhauer and they were willing to rebuild my blocks at a reasonable price. I would call them and see if they will still do that.

Cheers,

Butch

Warranties - Garhauer - 10 years, Harken - 7 years, Schaefer 5 years. They all make good blocks that are most likely better than the originals. A large number of Nonsuch owners have used Garhauer, partially due to the work of Murray Cressman, so they have built up a large knowledge base. Take pictures of the blocks and measurements. You can give those to the manufacturers along with information such as sail and line size but the weight of the boat and they will be able to give you solid recommendations on size.

I don’t recall where I got this but I recall being told or reading that Garhauer designs more clearance in the blocks so they are less likely to be jammed up by salt. I don’t know if it is true or if it works.

I have heard many INA members mentioning that they were able to order all kinds of mounting pads and have blocks custom drilled by Garhauer. In terms of above-and-beyond customer service, I think that Garhauer has them all beat. I would not hesitate to call them.

Garhauer It is!
It’s good that they are paying attention. It pays off sooner or later.

I am a happy Garhauer customer for many years including lots of blocks (and rigid vang) on a Bristol 45.5 used for a circumnavigation. Their blocks are outstanding quality and price. Only things you get with Harken or similar are lighter weight, but at much higher cost. Had a Harken triple ratcheting block on mainsheet of the Bristol and it was >$400 on sale.

Don,

Send me your e mail and I will shoot you a picture of all of My W10 parts.
