Has anyone tackled the job of re-bedding the tangs that support the head walls to the cabin top? I’ve already done the one for the shower bulkhead. I need to get to the screws behind the mirror. I’ve already removed the box in the salon covering the nuts. There appear to be bungs covering screws (4 of them) in the teak trim under the mirror. I was hoping I could avoid tearing into something like those. Any suggestions appreciated.

Henry,
As far as I am aware the only way access the bolts on the tang is to remove the mirror and to remove the mirror you have to drill out the bungs in order to remove the wood strip which holds the mirror in place. Use a Brad point drill bit so it won’t wander when you drill out the bung. Use a bit slightly smaller then the bung and carefully center it so that you don’t have to go to larger bungs when you put the mirror back in place. Lee Valley Tools sells plug/bung cutters that cut tapered bungs. A little glue on the bung and tap it back into place trying to line the grain of the bung with the grain of the wood strip. Then trim the bung with a sharp chisel or a flush cutting saw, also available at Lee Valley. A little oil such as Rosewood oil will give the bung a finish that closely matches the rest of the strip. Be careful handling the mirror. If you scratch the back it takes the silver off and will show up on the face of the mirror.
The foregoing was based on my experience on a 26C. Hopefully someone with a 30U will respond.
Thanks Mark
I was slowly coming to the same conclusion. It’s probably a good time to refinish that strip anyway. Being that low on the vanity, it gets more than it’s share of soapy water.
