What progress has been made this past week?
We were able to bring a few more people onboard, had them setup their profiles, and post some topics and replies, upload photos and a video (the video was actually a link to their Google Photos area). It seemed pretty painless (at least for those watching).
We are will be starting a project to gain some experience and produce some worthwhile content.
We have defined what will be a first project - a test case in group document creation. The topic is high tech lines, like dyneema, and people’s experiences using them on a Nonsuch. This project grew out of a desire to engage members of the Nonsuch community in a project using Discourse as compared to what was involved in creating the documents on the INA site. The goal is to have the team gain an understanding in the use of Discourse, have the Discourse site managers better understand what will be required to support Discourse use, and to assess this system’s ability to support collaborative projects. And, of course, to produce something of interest and value to the community in the process. We are currently reaching out to people who (we hope) may be interested in participating.
If you have an interest in joining this group, or have experience using dyneema you’d like to share, please drop an email to ina.discourse@outlook.com
Something else that Discourse can do:
We have taken a document on the nonsuch.org website and brought over into Discourse.
Things to Know When Looking to Buy a Nonsuch
This document is available in PDF format on the nonsuch.org web site. The PDF version is “frozen” - good for printing but it can’t be searched. In its current location there is no way to capture comments and suggestions, or to make revisions,
The copy on Discourse is different. It has a clickable table of contents on the right that follows your location as you scroll and allows you to jump to points within the document. The document contents will be included in search results. The document itself can be “locked” against changes, but people can still post comments underneath as a REPLY. It would be easy to periodically review those comments and incorporate changes into the document. Another nice feature is that it automatically keeps a version history, so you can move backward to previous edits if required. (click on the title )
Great Ideas
It seemed like a shame that the Great Ideas thread on Google was sliding into the forgotten past. I have copied over all of the postings so far into this category:
(just click on the title above to go to that category)
I think it would be a great idea to keep this thread alive and growing. If you have any projects to add, please contact me (jonlewit@gmail.com) and I will help you post them on Discourse.
About Replying to this posting
We would like to keep down the “noise” that discussions about Discourse can generate on this Google list. If you have a question or comment, unless you believe that it would really be of general interest, please don’t reply to the list but send it in an email to ina.discourse@outlook.com
We will respond and if appropriate, add the post and response in the Email Submissions topic within the General category on the Discourse site.
To repeat - test site is https://n26-115-233.discourse.group/ (out of town? - call collect!)
(in case you’re wondering, N26 #115 is Jon Lewit’s and #233 belongs to Bob Neches)
