This is the first in what we are planning will be a weekly update about our efforts to create a Nonsuch community site that will encompass how we use our Google Discussion Group but include the capability to do much more.
Currently “we” (Rob Cohen, Bob Neches, and Jon Lewit) are learning how Discourse works, discussing what might be a reasonable way to organize content, and discussing what might be a good way to demonstrate a proof of concept for using Discourse. The question is - how do we demonstrate it’s value so the community can decide if it’s worth adopting.
This group was self-selected - a few of us with IT skills, some time, and an interest in looking into an acceptable, more versatile replacement for Google Groups. (If this describes you, please write to one of us about joining this effort - our email addresses are at the bottom).
We are planning a pilot project. We expect to shortly invite a small group to jointly develop an informative article about dyneema. We see using this as a test case that will get a larger group involved in learning and using Discourse. It will also give us a look at one of it’s features - being able to work collaboratively on a topic.
As you are aware, one side project is to see if we can get the on-going discussions in the Google Group captured in Discourse. We have not given up hope that this will work. This is geared toward being able to demonstrate that there is value in having our discussions easily accessible as searchable reference material.
==========
By the way - you are reading this on our Discourse test site.**
When you are done reading this, you can click on the INA logo in the upper left, or click on “Topics” in the left side column, to get to the home page. The main area on the screen is a list of topics. You can see above the topics that the choice LATEST is highlighted and underlined, so the topics are sorted with the newest on top. If you click the last choice in the line - CATEGORIES - you will get a different view. You can click on one of the listed categories to see the topics in that area, or click on any topic and you open it up and see the original posting and the replies.
The search bar near the top works, but there isn’t much content yet.
You are not signed in, so you cannot post or reply to anything.
If you ever get lost, just click on the INA logo in the upper left to get back to the home page.
