I have exhaust fumes coming from what I assume is the air intake port, the plastic cover on the port side of my Westerbeke 27. Not only dangerous but extremely dirty. The engine runs fine though.

You might want to check the exhaust elbow for any leaking exhaust through rusted out hole(s). I had that happen while on a cruise years ago and did a temporary repair using Marine Tex and metal screening until I could replace the exhaust elbow. Managed to finally clean all the soot from the engine area when I converted to electric propulsion now the area remains clean.
Exhaust coming from the air intake indicates a stuck exhaust valve…
