How to check fuel lift pump and bleed fuel lines on W27 diesel

My w27 has been running fine until yesterday when I started It with the manual stop lever pulled up. It ran poorly for a few minutes then died. I discovered the stop handle error and pushed the handle back down but could not restart the motor. I tried cracking the nuts at the injectors to bleed the system but no fuel flowed when turning the motor over. From what I have been reading since then there is an electric fuel pump on the W27. Are all W27’s fitted with electric? I have not yet emptied the lazarette to get my old fat frame down in there to see. If electric can anyone point me to a reasonably priced replacement? Any advice to sort this out . My boat is a 1987 N30U.
PS there was a squealing sound when it first started.

Brian: Since the W27 has a lift pump, bleeding at the injectors should not be necessary. Turn the key on, don’t crank, and listen for the clicking from the port lazerette. You may have to muffle the oil pressure/high temp alarm to hear it. If you can’t hear it, you may have to feel it. If that’s your problem, they can be had at the local auto parts store.

Thanks Joe. Do I meet the numbers off the pump when I find it and determine it’s defective or will they be able to locate the correct pump just telling them what motor it works with?

I suggest you replace your filters too if you haven’t done that recently. I change mine once a year as preventive maintenance.

Brian,
I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. I discovered that while pulling the shut off handle on the cable stopped the fuel flow, when the cable was pushed back in the lever on the engine did not return to the run position. That lever relies on a spring to return to the run position and the spring had become corroded and ineffective.

Thanks Don,
I will defiantly check that out since that shut off is what started the whole problem to begin with.

It’s simple lift pump at around 7 (More or less) lbs of pressure. I’m not sure of the inlet/outlet size, though.

I have sorted the problem with my W27. After first checking the spring for the fuel shutoff lever and determining it was doing its job I went in search of the fuel lift pump by tracing the fuel lines from the Recor water fuel separator. I expected the lift pump,to be on the port side above the high pressure injector pump. After removing some shelving and seeing where the lines went I ended up right at the front(rear?)of the motor at the companionway. Expecting to have to replace the pump I found instead that the poorly secured spade connector had vibrated loose. Reconnected it and Voila! Running like a bear.
Thanks for the help.
