Raw Water Pump Replacement Question

Hello all,
I bought a replacement Westerbeke 27A raw water pump (the 37431 that replaces the original) and my question is this:
Is it fairly straight forward to remove the old original raw water pump and replace it with the new? A simple in and out?
I’ve googled the conversations and got some info but nothing that really answers my question.
Any tips or tricks? I’m not overly mechanically inclined so any help would be appreciated.

Very awkward, very tight, of course very hot, a lot of head banging. Other than that bolts off and bolts on. Beware of the paper gasket, this is not packing material but a gasket be careful not to toss or rip.
Good luck.

It really depends on how that starboard locker is configured. Not all 30 C’s or U’s are the same. My pump will come out in about 20 minutes and takes a little over a half hour to go back in. (However, I am a retired mechanic) Be advised that the replacement pump may have fittings pointed in a different direction then the original. My advice to you is to replace every hose you take off with new ones of the approved type. I’ve added a hose bib fitting to my system as a means of flushing and winterizing. Enclosed are some photos of mine.
PS – Avoid any 90 deg angles

This thread seems like a good opportunity to bring up the question once again on which way to bend the rubber vanes on the new impeller. Some have said it matters and others that it doesn’t. Because the vanes will flip to the correct configuration as soon as the engine starts, and the vanes will not be damaged.

Is this question now moot, because it doesn’t matter? I ask because I will be changing my impeller next week.

According to the instructions that came with my impellor it doesn’t matter which way the vanes are bent as they sort themselves out once the engine is turning. I use an electrical cable tie to compress the vanes as a result some bend one way, some the other. If I thought the vanes would be damaged by being reversed I’d use a different manufacturer. I change the impellor every year with the annual maintenance in spring.

Well spoken Joe. I will keep it in mind if ever I am blessed with owning a Nonsuch 26-36. I am on the hunt. I like the hose outlet for raw water spray hose?

Hi Ed, the vanes will sort themselves out once the engine starts. If you’ve ever taken the cover off and just jogged the starter without actually starting it you’ll notice that
the veins all go in one direction but when the engine stops the shaft can rock back a quarter turn thus causing some of the veins to fall in the other direction. Upon starting again the veins do the proper thing and all line up.

Hello to Marlene.

Ed,
No understanding needed.
Just do it.

That hose bib is also useful for a back-up emergency bilge pump. Shut off the seawater seacock, connect a hose and start sucking.
