I’ve visited two local sailmakers to ask them if they could make a new sail for a Nonsuch. Both companies are highly respected and have been in business for decades.
They both looked into it and came to the same conclusion: no, can’t do unless…
Their reason not to make a sail was lack of experience with these kinds of boats (obviously) and the risc that what they would assume a suitable sailshape could actually fail completely in practice.
No experience with unstayed masts and catboats in general that is, because they have been making sails since 1884 and 1823 respectively.
…unless, I provide them with detailed data to design a sail or even better: panel plot files.
Is there a way or is having a sail made in the US/CAN the only option?
Happy new year !! (And if you speak to the folks in Thailand, wish them a happy lunar new year).
I’ve heard nothing but good things about Rolly Tasker. And, many lofts here in North America (and, I’ll bet in the UK) work very closely with lofts or shops in the Far East to produce good sails. I would think that you could contact a North American loft that has made sails for a Nonsuch 36 and simply order what you want. I would imagine that mast length, boom length, etc. on your boat are the same as “standard” (but I am sure that you will carefully check).
Nice to hear from you again - hope all is well. I may be wrong but I think that you will save yourself some money by buying your sail from a North American loft. My (very) personal recommendation is Travis Blaine at Mack Sails in Stuart, Florida. I got a gorgeous cruising sail for a very good price and the best service one could want. I do believe that he has made sails for most sizes of Nonsuches.
Yes fareastsails.com
Maybe not for racers who want to be able to access their sailmaker for tweaks but for a very well constructed cruising sail at a much better price (when I bought mine at least) they are definitely worth an email.
Thank you all for your replies. There is a representative of Rolly Tasker nearby so that could be an option. I’ll include Far East Sails and Lee Sails as well. I’ll let you know what happens.
